Sounds like you're getting a good start on your tour of Cairo! When you go out tomorrow, be sure to look at the tops of the more modern buildings, if you can. There is some huge tax that gets levied on the builders as soon as construction is complete. To avoid this tax, no building in Cairo is ever finished. On the roof, you will see at least one concrete column with rebar sticking out the top, like they are considering adding another floor. And, yes, that is an open sewer running down the street. I recommend taking your shoes off as soon as you step in your hotel room and showering at night - loads of exhaust fumes from those "laws optional" cars! Have fun!
